Straight answers to the questions our customs brokers hear most often from overseas suppliers and U.S. importers.
Importers may legally file their own entries, but most commercial shipments valued over USD 2,500 require a formal entry supported by a customs bond, correct HTS classification, valuation and duty payment. A licensed U.S. customs broker prepares and transmits these filings to CBP on your behalf, reducing the risk of delays, holds and penalties.
The Importer Security Filing (ISF, also called 10+2) is required for ocean cargo destined for the United States. It must be submitted to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at least 24 hours before the cargo is loaded onto the vessel at the foreign port. Late, inaccurate or missing filings can result in liquidated damages of up to USD 5,000 per violation.
Full Container Load (FCL) is usually more cost-effective when your cargo fills most of a 20-foot or 40-foot container and offers faster handling with less risk of damage. Less than Container Load (LCL) consolidates smaller shipments with other cargo, so you pay only for the space you use. Our team compares both options based on volume, weight, transit time and budget.
Our New York offices in Staten Island and Lynbrook support cargo moving through the Port of New York and New Jersey and East Coast airports, while our Diamond Bar, California office supports West Coast cargo through the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
